While Thomas Edison was working on the invention of the lightbulb, it took a whole team of men 24 straight hours to put just one together. When Edison was finally finished with one light bulb, he gave it to a young man, who anxiously carried it up the stairs. While he was halfway up the stairs, the poor young fellow dropped the bulb the men had worked so hard on. It took the entire team of men twenty-four more hours to make another bulb. Finally, tired and ready for a break, Thomas Edison was ready again to have his bulb carried up the stairs. What did he do? He gave it to the same young boy who dropped the first one.
Aren’t you glad for second chances? The New Year brings endless opportunities for a fresh start and a new beginning. With a new year, many of us feel like the mistakes, missteps and disappointments from the past year no longer have a hold over us. It’s as if something magical takes place between December 31 and January 1 that allows us to start over.
In reality, we can get a fresh start with God anytime and anywhere. In 1 John 1:9, it says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” If we confess our sins to him, He promises to make us totally clean. You can experience the powerful river of forgiveness that flows from the cross of Christ. There isn’t anything that can withstand its cleansing flow.
So, you don’t have to wait until another year to find redemption and forgiveness. You can have a fresh start with God right now!
